- Who supervises the program? Ask whether a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) designs and oversees your child’s plan, and how often they observe sessions.
- What does a typical session look like? Play-based, naturalistic approaches often feel very different from highly structured drills. Ask to observe if you can.
- How are goals chosen and measured? Good programs set individualized, meaningful goals and share progress data with you regularly.
- How do you involve parents? Parent training and coaching help skills carry over to home and community.
- In-home, center-based, or both? Each has trade-offs. The right answer depends on your child, your schedule, and your goals.
- What are the staff ratios and turnover? Consistent, well-supported therapists matter for trust and progress.
- How do you handle challenging behavior? Look for compassionate, assent-based approaches that prioritize your child’s dignity and comfort.
- What are the logistics? Waitlist, hours, insurance accepted, and prior authorization all affect when and how you can start.
Trust your instincts
Data and credentials matter, but so does how your child responds and how the team makes you feel. A provider who listens, respects your family’s values, and celebrates your child is worth a great deal.
